A Victorian gentlemans fossil collection in mahogany box
A Victorian gentlemans fossil collection in mahogany box
Inspired by the Gentleman's craze for collecting fossils during the 19th century. The mahogany box is Victorian and dates from circa.1860, I have applied an aged paper label and added miniature glass specimen bottle. The box is in lovely condition complete with working lock and key. The specimens have been collected by myself and Jane on our many fossil hunting expeditions. We have cleaned and treated the specimens. They have all been responsibly collected from British shorelines. The box measures 19.5cms wide, 10.7cms deep and 4.3cms tall. Specimens included in this collection are shark teeth from Eocene Ypresian period 100 million years ago found in Ouled Abdoun, Morocco, ammonites, gastropods and bivalves from Gault clay lower Albian period 100 million years old. Ammonites, belemnites and crinoid sections from Jurassic, shell slab from Isle of Wight etc....
